Figure 3. GFAP and glutamine synthetase levels: morphology and immunolocalization patterns

Mannose prevented GFAP upregulation, but did not maintain glutamine synthetase levels. A: Mannose did not allow outer segments to organize (arrows), nor did it prevent cell loss in the ONL and INL (arrowheads). B: GFAP expression was suppressed in contrast to the upregulation noted in RPE-deprived retinas (compare to Figure 2B). C: CRALBP immunolabeling followed a radial pattern (arrows) and ended abruptly at the limiting membranes (arrowheads). D: Glutamine synthetase expression was suppressed compared retinas in which the RPE was adherent to the neural retina during culture (compare to Figure 1D). RPE = retinal pigment epithelium, OS = outer segment, IS = inner segment, OLM = outer limiting membrane, ONL = outer nuclear layer, OPL = outer plexiform layer, INL = inner nuclear layer, IPL = inner plexiform layer, GCL = ganglion cell layer, ILM = inner limiting membrane. Bar = 10 mm.
