A,B: Detection of specific genes encoding the kainate receptor subunits GluR5-7 and KA1-KA2 in samples from fresh and fixed monkey retina following construction of cDNA libraries using TPEA RT-PCR. Gene-Specific PCR demonstrates that kainate receptors can be identified from fresh (A) or fixed tissue (B). C-E: Each of the AMPA, mGluR and EAAT genes can also be detected in fixed tissue. No genes were detected when reverse transcriptase was omitted (data not shown). Arrowhead indicates 600 base pairs. Primers used for gene-specific PCR and expected product sizes are the same as for Figure 6 and listed in Table 1.
