Table 1. Mitochondrial crista junction diameter in rod and cone photoreceptor inner segments and central nervous system neurons
Comparisons of cristae junction diameters in rod and cone inner segment mitochondria with those in neurons from several different rat brain regions reveal that rod mitochondria have larger openings and cone mitochondria have smaller openings than do neuronal brain mitochondria. Cone mitochondria have a 30% smaller crista junction opening compared to those in rods. Data for the rods are from reference [39]. Data for the cones are from this paper.
