Light micrographs of wild-type (A), P23H (B-D), and S334ter (E-G) rat retinas at 21-22 days of age. The retinas of the slowly degenerating P23H-2 (B) and S334ter-9 (E) lines are indistinguishable from that of the wild-type rats (A) at this age. The retinas from lines P23H-3 (C) and S334ter-4 (F) show a loss of about 15-20% of the photoreceptor nuclei in the outer nuclear layer (ONL), and those from lines P23H-1 (D) and S334ter-5 (G) have lost about 50-60% of their nuclei by this age.
