Figure 3. NMDA-induced cell loss is attenuated in p53+/- mice

NMDA-induced cell loss is attenuated, but not blocked, in p53+/- mice. Micrographs showing DAPI-stained sections of control and NMDA-injected (160 nmol) retinas from p53+/+ (A, B), p53+/- (C, D), and p53-/- (E, F) mice. The p53 alleles were maintained on an inbred 129/Sv genetic background. The animals were sacrificed 4 days after treatment. The cell loss in the retinal ganglion cell layer (GCL) is nearly identical in p53+/+ and p53-/- mice. However, the cell loss appears to be reduced in p53+/- mice at this time point.
