Figure 1. Functional distribution of ciliary body subtracted ESTs

Distribution of 284 subtracted ESTs isolated from a human ciliary body cDNA library [1] into 17 functional groups. Bars indicate the relative number of ESTs in each group. Numbers above horizontal lines indicate the percentage of ESTs distributed into related groups. A group comprised by ESTs encoding polypeptides involved in protein synthesis, protein folding, secretion and trafficking, and degradation amount up to 20% of all the ESTs. Clones encoding proteins involved in different forms of metabolism comprised 12% ESTs, in cytoskeleton and contractility 7%. However, the major group of ESTs (a total of 105 or 37%) corresponded to genes of unknown function. Additional ESTs with identical homologies to known genes, it supports the view that the ciliary body is multifunctional. This is supported by the isolation of ESTs encoding gene products associated to circadian rhythm and phototransduction, neuroendocrine, neuronal or glial markers, immune-related functions, antioxidant and xenobiotic enzymes, melanin synthesis, steroid and non-steroid metabolism.
