Consensus transcription factor binding sites are indicated: MARE in pink, homeobox binding (Hb) sites in orange, SRY/Sox site in brown, AP-1 in purple, NF-E2 in blue, and TATA box in green (see text for details and references). Sequences are numbered relative to the transcription start site determined experimentally in mouse [7]. Exon 1 is shown in red.
