Expression of vimentin (green), but no expression of alpha-SMA (red), indicates that the corneal fibroblasts retained their phenotype in CFib + Epi organotypic cultures even after 18 days of culture. Vimentin-positive corneal fibroblasts populated the matrix beneath the epithelium. Meanwhile, CMyo + Epi expressed both vimentin and alpha-SMA, indicative of the myofibroblast phenotype.
