The text "retinitis pigmentosa (RP)" was changed to "retinitis pigmentosa (OMIM entry 268000)" in the first paragraph of the introduction. The abbreviations "Fig." and "no." were expanded to "Figure" and "number", respectively, throughout the article. The characters enclosing citations to references were changed from parentheses () to brackets []. Several instances of incorrect spacing between a word and puntuation have been corrected.
