Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated uridine 5′-triphosphate-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive staining (green) was detected in lithium chloride (LiCl)– (C and D) versus sodium chloride (NaCl)–treated (A and B) corneas before (N) and at 5 days p.i. Cell nuclei were stained with 4,6-diamino-2-phenyl indole (DAPI; blue). Apoptotic cells were determined by colocalization of TUNEL and DAPI-positive staining (as indicated by white arrows).
