Figure 4. Supplementation with lutein, zeaxanthin, or α-tocopherol suppressed H2O2-induced lipid peroxidation in human lens epithelial cells (HLEC). Subconfluent HLEC were pre-incubated with or without 5 µM of lutein, zeaxanthin or α-tocopherol for 48 h and then exposed to 100 µM H2O2 for 1 h. MDA levels were determined by an HPLC system. Each value represents the mean±SD (n=6). *Indicates a p<0.05 when compared to cells not treated H2O2 and **indicates a p<0.05 when comparing to the group that were not supplemented with any of these nutrients and treated with the same level of H2O2.
