Figure 3. Histopathology of human keratomycosis induced by C. albicans strains SC5314 and VE175. A: At pH 7.3 SC5314 established superficial infection by day 1 post inoculation, and hyphae proliferated and invaded centrally by day 3. Strain VE175 produced few pesudohyphae in the superficial cornea that did not penetrate through anterior lamellae by day 3. B: At pH 8.0 strain SC5314 formed hyphae that extended around superficial scarification site on day 1 post inoculation and continued to invade by day 3. Strain VE175 produced few filamentous forms on day 1 or day 3. Periodic acid-Schiff stain. Scale bars, 50µm.
