Gene expression was significantly (p≤0.05) altered by more than 2 fold in the rabbit HSV-1 latent trigeminal ganglia (TG). Forty expressed genes were significantly downregulated in the rabbit HSV-1 latent TG. Downregulation of genes in the rabbit HSV-1 latent TG were mainly in the catabolic categories of protein degradation and carbohydrate metabolism. There was no obvious pattern in gene expression that would explain the maintenance of viral latency.
