The following abbreviations were used: macular area (M), paramacular area (P1), mid-postequatorial periphery (P2), fold change in gene expression observed between M and P1 (M/P1), and fold change in gene expression observed between M and P2 (M/P2). Genes with a fold change of 3.4 or higher in the microarray experiments are shown, sorted on M/P2. In the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction results, numbers in between parentheses denote fold changes that were not statistically significant. (A p>0.01 was considered significant for microarray experiments and p>0.05 was considered relevant for real-time PCR experiments). Positive numbers relate to higher RPE expression in the macula compared to the periphery. Negative numbers relate to lower gene expression in the macular RPE. Some experiments were not done (n.d.) for several reasons, such as low gene expression, suitable primers could not be developed, low priority target (choice), etc.
