Figure 6. Loss of membrane integrity in the cortical fiber zone preserved when Src kinase activation is prevented

Electron microscopy analysis of fiber cells in the cortical region of cataract cultures (A,C) showed membrane defects including undulating membranes, separations between neighboring cells, and cellular dysmorphology. A and C are two different magnifications of the same region of the lens section, located within the region of the cortical opacity. Black arrows are at the same position of the section, and denote a region of membrane separation. When lenses were grown in cataract culture but in the presence of the Src kinase inhibitor PP1, (B,D) lens fiber cell morphology was preserved and linearity of the membranes maintained. B and D are two different magnifications of the same region of the lens section. White arrows are at the same position of the section, and denote a region of membrane linearity. Sections of lenses in the presence and absence of PP1 are from cortical fiber regions at the same depth in the section, close to the equatorial zone.
