Figure 6. Light micrograph of plastic embedded sections from normal and rd retinas

Light micrograph of plastic embedded sections of normal retina (A) and rd retina (B) on P12 (neither animals received injections). Between 10 to 12 layers of photoreceptor nuclei are present within the outer nuclear layer (ONL) at P12 in the normal C57 BL/6 retina. Both inner (IS) and outer (OS) segments are present. At the same age, the retina of the rd mouse shows severe photoreceptor degeneration, with only 5 to 6 layers of photoreceptor nuclei remaining and no outer segments and only rudiments of inner segments. The outer limiting membrane (OLM), outer plexiform layer (OPL), inner nuclear layer (INL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), nerve fiber layer (NFL), and inner limiting membrane (ILM) are identified. The scale bar represents 40 μm.
