Table 1. Generation of ak/ak chimeras with Fgfr1Δtmk/Δtmk and Fgfr1Δtmk/+ ES cells

This table summarizes the data generated from the chimera experiment. Five chimeras were generated with the heterozygous mutant Fgfr1 ES cells and 10 chimeras were generated with the homozygous mutant Fgfr1 ES cells. These individual chimeras were categorized as low (less than 20% ES cell contribution) or high (more than 20% ES cell contribution). All eyes (two from each chimera) were sectioned and analyzed and categorized relative to the condition of the lens. Lenses that were no bigger than those typically seen in a homozygous ak were categorized as no rescue, while lenses similar in size and morphology to a wildtype lens were categorized as full rescue. The lenses where there was evidence of lens fiber differentiation, but that were of intermediate size or somewhat abnormal morphology were considered to be partially rescued. Clearly both heterozygous and homozygous Fgfr1 mutant ES cells were able to contribute to differentiated lens fibers in chimeric combination with homozygous ak mice. In the "Chimera" column, tmk/+ indicates ak/ak<->Fgfr1Δtmk/+ and tmk/tmk indicates ak/ak<->Fgfr1Δtmk/Δtmk.
