MicroRNAs show distinct tissue specificity. Total RNA from adult mouse brain (B), retina-rich (R), lens (L) and corneal epithelial (C) fractions were analyzed by northern hybridization with 32P-labeled oligonucleotides to mir-181, -182, -183, -184, -204, and -205. Within the lens, strong expression is noted for mir-181, -184, and -204, while mir-181, -182, -183, and -204 are strongly expressed in the retina and brain. Note the absence of mir-205 expression in the lens. The 5S ribosomal fraction serves as the loading control.
