Figure 1. Specific inhibition of endothelial proliferation by vasostatin (VS)

A: The effect of VS on the proliferation of bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC) and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. After treatment with VS at various dosages for 48 h, the viability of BAEC or RPE was determined using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay and results expressed as mean percentages (with the error bars representing the SD) of control absorbance from quadruplicate experiments. B: The inhibitory effect of VS on endothelial proliferation in the presence of angiogenic factors. In the presence of bFGF (100 ng/ml) or VEGF (20 ng/ml), the effect of VS (1 μg/ml) on the proliferation of BAEC was analyzed. The asterisk indicates a statistically significant difference from the control groups (p<0.001).
