Table 2. Smoking history and APOE genotypes in the study population
The frequency distribution of APOE genotypes, APOE alleles and measures of smoking history for 377 AMD patients and 198 unaffected controls is shown in the table. The sum of current and past smokers is less than ever smokers due to 12 cases and 6 controls with missing information on start year. Differences between categorical variables were tested with univariate χ2 tests without adjustment for age and sex. Fisher's exact test was used to compare the APOE genotype distribution. The lower table compares means of smoking variables that were only calculated for ever smokers. Differences between variables were tested with univariate t-tests. The number of individuals indicates those with complete data for the respective variable.
