Table 1. Clinical description of the study population

The clinical classification of 377 AMD patients and 198 unaffected controls is shown in the table. The grading system is taken from Schmidt et al. [19] and Seddon et al. [27]. Population characteristics are shown in the lower table. RPE represents retinal pigment epithelium.

Clinical description AMD grade Cases (%) Controls (%)
-------------------------------- --------- ----------- ------------

No drusen or small (<63 μm) 1 136 (68.7)
nonextensive drusen without RPE
abnormalities

Extensive small drusen or 2 62 (31.3)
nonextensive intermediate drusen

hyper- or hypopigmentation

Extensive intermediate drusen or 3 76 (20.2)
any large (>=125 μm), soft drusen,
including drusenoid RPE
detachment

Geographic atrophy (area of RPE 4 41 (10.9)
atrophy with sharp margins,
usually visible choroidal
vessels, at least 175 μm diameter)

Exudative AMD, including 5 260 (68.9)
nondrusenoid RPE detachment,
choroidal neovascularization,
subretinal hemorrhage or
fibrosis, or photocoagulation
scar consistent with treatment
of AMD
